For most households and many businesses, waste or trash disposal can be a troublesome consideration. One of the primary ways to improve the efficiency and reduce the difficulty and cost of trash management is to reduce the volume of thrash through the use of some sort of compaction equipment. Most waste disposal services charge by volume for trash pick-up, although additional charges for excess weight may also occur.
Excess weight is usually based on average weight for compacted trash, so normal compacted trash will be the least expensive form of trash to store and dispose of.
Compacted trash is not only easier to store and transport, compacted trash tends to be less attractive to rodents and, because it is probably bagged in plastic, less likely to present an odor control problem.
The first commercial compactors began to appear in the early 1940s. These early trash compactors were made to crush empty oil cans. Inexpensive hand operated can crushers are available for compacting drink cans, and even food cans. These are popular for recycling purposes. By the early 1970s the design of trash compactors had progressed to the point that practical units designed for home use were being produced and installed in many homes. Some of these are hydraulic, and some simply use electric motors and levers. Commercial trash compaction equipment has become available in a variety of sizes, and may be designed for general use or specialized use. Traditional trash compactors often use hydraulic rams and heavy metal plates to compress mostly dry trash. Landfill compactors are usually bulldozers or front-end loaders with specially designed wheels.
Another form of compactor is the screw type compactors. These type of compactors use a large, heavy-duty auger, usually powered by an industrial electric motor, to both shred and compress trash. These types of compactors are usually used on a continuous basis, or at least for extended periods of time. Most wood and yard trash shredder-compactors are of this type. Wood and yard trash treated this way may be used for compost or mulching purposes. At least it is much easier to transport, store, or dispose of in this form.
